MOOT XXVII NMR Symposium (August 6/14)

Dear MOOTers,

As you might already know, the MOOT XXVII NMR Symposium will be taking place over the October 18-19th weekend (2014) at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), in the heart of Montreal's city center (red building on the map).

An evening at the pub will be organized on Friday Oct.17 to enjoy the city life and relax before the symposium.

This year we will have two distinguished guest speakers. James Davis (Guelph) has accepted to talk about Canadian NMR research in membranes, and John Ripmeester (NRC) will share his career path and views of solid-state NMR in materials.

We have negotiated very competitive rates with the nearby Hyatt Hotel (St-Catherine/Jeanne-Mance) for standard rooms with 2 double beds for $149/night for single and double occupancy. Breakfast is not included but we'll do our best to provide muffins, croissants and coffee before the morning sessions.

Parking will be available for 10$/day at the Place-des-Arts (just across the street from the Hyatt Hotel) or at UQAM.

The official website of MOOT XXVII is now online. You'll be able to find there all the details regarding the symposium, registration, program and accommodation. The registration will open at the end of August.

PhD/MSc positions in solid-state NMR, Université du Québec à Montréal, Montréal, QC (August 7/13)

We are looking for two motivated and dynamic PhD or MSc candidates to join our Laboratory of NMR of Biological Systems as early as May 2013. Candidates must be interested in membrane physico-chemistry and NMR spectroscopy with biological applications and have a background in chemistry or biochemistry or related field.

The research projects concern the in vivo NMR study of the interaction of drugs and environmental contaminants with microorganisms such as bacteria and microalgae, as well as the development of model cell membranes to study specific interactions with membrane components. Students will have full access to 400 and 600 MHz NMR spectrometers as well as infrastructure for bacterial and microalgal cell growth.

Interested students should contact Prof. Isabelle Marcotte at: [marcotte.isabelle "at" uqam.ca]
